Gig: Militarie Gun @ Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff

Militarie Gun by Ross Peacy

Militarie Gun took the stage at Cardiff’s famous Clwb Ifor Bach on 27 August as part of a brief European tour, including shows at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Supporting their latest single, "Thought You Were Waving," the night featured opening acts Tripsun, who delivered an energetic set of indie rock and emo-influenced tracks, and New York City's Lip Critic, who transformed the venue with their high-energy blend of electronic music, punk, and hardcore. In the intimate setting, Militarie Gun’s powerful performance and connection with the crowd made for an unforgettable evening, highlighted by camaraderie between the bands and the audience.

Tripsun

London’s Tripsun opened tonight’s show with an energetic set of indie rock and emo-influenced tracks. Their warm sound and positive energy made them the perfect act to kick off the night, quickly winning over the crowd during their brief performance. Closing with ‘Hydrate / Daily Habits,’ they encouraged the audience to join in on the refrain of “It pulls me back down,” expertly setting the tone for the evening.

Lip Critic

New Yourk’s Lip Critic, were a standout addition to the bill. Their latest record, Hex Dealer, released in May, serves as a perfect introduction to the band. They delivered a high-energy blend of electronic music infused with elements of punk and hardcore. The dual vocalists and two live drummers created a visually and sonically unique experience. As the heaviest band on the lineup, their frenetic energy transformed a rainy summer’s night in Cardiff into a vibrant punk rock digital party. It’s easy to see why Lip Critic have been tipped them for greater exposure. A highlight of their set was when Danny Eberle leapt from behind the drum kit, grabbed the mic, and threw himself into the crowd, further amping up the intensity.

Militarie Gun

It feels lucky tonight to see Militarie Gun in such a small venue (under 400 cap) considering the momentum that’s been building behind them. ‘Life Under The Gun’ having being released last year and receiving such high praise. Their new single ‘Thought You Were Leaving’ perfectly sums up their mix of punk and alternative rock. Lyrics like “I thought you were waving, turns out you were drawing” seems destined to be sung out by larger and larger crowds. Several times during the show singer Ian Shelton leant into the arms of those in the front row, who were only too keen to embrace him and sing along. Ian spoke mid set to retell the story of their original meeting with Lip Critic, and how the band become friends after being invited to see them play live. Lip Critic’s Danny crowd surfing mid-set only to be pulled to the stage by a smiling Ian is perfect example of the amazing time had by everyone at Clwb.
