Gig: Hot Mulligan @ O2 Academy Islington, London

Hot Mulligan by Anne Pfalzgraf

After releasing their latest single “End Eric Sparrow And The Life Of Him”, Hot Mulligan returned to the UK for a run of headline shows and summer festivals. Last stop of the headline tour was at the O2 Academy Islington in London, on 10 July.

Beauty School

Starting off and setting the tone for a night filled with high-energy, sad songs and catchy hooks, Beauty School took the stage to get the crowd warmed up. Even though they had a temporary lineup change on the drums with Tom Pattinson filling in for Charlie Thomas, they still delivered and were rewarded with a big sing-along at the end of their set and crowd surfers greeting Joe Cabrera, who got down to the barricade and joined the crowd.

Hot Mulligan

By the time Hot Mulligan walked onto the stage to T.A.T.U’s “All The Things She Said”, the crowd was already eagerly awaiting the band and got off their feet right from the start while the intro smoothly transitioned into “How Do You Know It’s Not Armadillo Shells?”

With a career-spanning setlist, they saw crowd surfers and circle pits right from the beginning and had the crowd scream the lyrics back at them on the top of their lungs. Halfway through the set the crowd started ‘join us’ chants encouraging vocalist Tades Sanville to join them which he promptly shut down with a ‘fuck no – that’s the most anxiety-inducing thing’. They raced through the set seemingly upping the energy with each song before sending the crowd off with “John ‘The Rock’ Cena, Can You Smell What The Undertaker” after a night filled with infectious riffs and cathartic lyrics.
