Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single "Lonely Ghost"?

Nicole: I had been doing one to one therapy for a couple of months now with a therapist that I actually connect with. I wrote the words to “Lonely Ghost” after a therapy session and had came to realise my mind works differently to most of the people in my life and that it wasn't my fault. I learnt a little self compassion that day.

What do you hope listeners take away from "Lonely Ghost" after hearing it for the first time?

Nicole: It would be nice to think that someone listens to “Lonely Ghost” and takes something from it that serves them. I hope that our songs can help others who are struggling with their thoughts, to give themselves the same self compassion that I was able to give myself. We're all so hard on ourselves, life is tough. Sometimes we just need a positive reminder and to know we're not alone.

Can you walk us through the creative process behind "Lonely Ghost"? How did the song come together, from inception to recording?

Our songwriting process does tend to follow a similar formula, due to the make up and location of our members. “Lonely ghost” started as an instrumental idea worked on remotely between Ryan and David, and took many forms over the time until recording. Although it features lighter guitar tones, and no minor key shifts, the song still became heavy enough to carry the message, yet fast enough to be the perfect speed to nod your head along to.

We recorded with Jack Bennet at Lapwing Studios (Lonely the Brave, Empire State Bastard, Grumblebee) however due to personal commitments, we recorded our parts at separate points and in different ways. Scott visited alone to track drums, then Ryan & Stephen recorded their raw takes at home. David & Nic were last up utilising Jack's talent for guitar layering and vocal tracking to finish off the track. Mastered by Grant of Fader Mastering and lyric video by Lee Waters.

Mental health themes are an important aspect of your music. How do you approach incorporating these themes into your songwriting, and what impact do you hope it has on your listeners?

Nicole: We use songwriting as a tool like how you would use a diary. We write down our thoughts and feelings, like a release, the process is very therapeutic. Everything we struggle to say, somehow we can write it in song. I don't quite understand it fully yet, but it's definitely a journey. It may be that when talking to someone face to face about our feelings, it makes us feel extremely vulnerable and exposed. Somehow, the band gives me the confidence to say what I need to say, they're my rock.

Looking ahead, what can fans expect from Saint Vienna next?

Nicole: Looking ahead listeners can expect progression, of what kind we're unsure. We love to challenge ourselves, lyrically and musically, to always try to do something a little different from the last track. I will always remember a producer said to us 'you can always write a better song' which is so true, we're definitely not precious. One thing I do know is that promoting positive mental health will always be at the forefront of what we do. We will continue to be a positive voice to anyone who needs it.

“Lonely Ghost” from Saint Vienna is out now and available on all good streaming platforms.
