Episode 28: Yuletide Special
Last night’s episode of The Scene with me your host Thom with an H, was a bit of a different one as we celebrate the holiday season with our Yuletide Special!
I opened the show with our hour-one headliners Café Hop the brand new project of ME REX’s Rich Mandell and The Cheerbleedrz Soph Mac, with their absolutely ace festive single “Come Home”. I followed with Theroretical Girl’s beautiful cover of “2000 Miles” and completed the opening trio with “Anorak Christmas” by Nixon an artist who deserves far more recognition for his work.
I then let my inner punk kid get some goodies out of his stocking in the shape of "Lonely Star" by Dream Nails and "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear” by The Red West.
Next, I spun "The Fox in the Snow" by Belle & Sebastian probably my favourite winter-inspired song of all time and "On Christmas Night” by Nelson Can.
Forgoing our unsigned spotlight for our Yuletide Special I spun BIG SPECIALS brand new cover of “Stop The Cavalry!” if you can spare a little I would suggest you head over to the band’s Bandcamp page as they are raising funds for Save the Children’s, Gaza Emergency Appeal with the song.
After that, I played some of Kelly’s festive favourites starting with her all-time favourite band in the world Daphne Loves Derby with "Christmas Lights", then it was "In Like A Lion (Always Winter)" by Relient K, and "Ho Ho Hopefully” by The Maine.
I then kept the pop-punk festive spirits going like Father Christmas after one too many Sherries with "I'm With You" by Mayday Parade and "X12 Days of XXXMASX” by From First To Last.
Then it was the turn for "George And Andrew" by The Boy Least Likely To and "Zombie Christmas” by Emmy The Great & Tim Wheeler.
I closed out the first hour with the first of two cover versions of "Last Christmas” this time round it was one of our favourites of the show BEST EX who very kindly emailed me her cover over this week.
Our second hour kicked off with our hour two headliners Los Campesions! with “When Christmas Comes” the first track from the band’s amazing festive EP A Los Campesinos! Christmas which came out almost 10 years ago now, followed by "Forget December" by Something Corporate.
I then started a mince pie-fueled mosh pit with "Icicles" by Punchline and "Naughty Christmas” by Lacuna Coil.
Next, I played the second of our "Last Christmas" by Florida Pop-punkers Felicity (not to be confused with 90s-inspired alt-rockers Feliecete) and "Father Christmas” by Action Action.
Inlew of our second unsigned spotlight, I played Hannah Rose Platt’s new festive cracker “The Wendigo Rag”.
After that, it was time for some massive alt-festive classics as I spun "I Won't Be Home For Christmas" by Blink-182, "Is This Christmas?" by The Wombats, and "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” by The Offspring.
I then played "Christmas Sucks" by Velodrome 2000 and "All Alone On Christmas” by Boy Jumps Ship.
I slowed things down with Bright Eyes’ version of "Silent Night", Jerkcurb’s haunting version of “Walking In The Air” and threw a bit of a curve ball in the shape of "The Christmas Wish” by The Muppets & John Denver.
Finally, I closed out our Yuletide Special with the legendary “Fairytale Of New York” by The Pogues Feat Kirsty MacColl with Shane MacGowan’s passing last month I couldn’t think of a better way to close the show.
Thanks to everyone who tuned in to last night’s Yuletide Special episode of The Scene! I'll be back next week with our best-of-the-year show!
