Episode 29: Best Of The Year Special
Last best of the year special night’s episode of The Scene with me your host Thom with an H, showcased some of the best tracks that 2023 had to offer.
It’s been an absolutely crazy year since starting The Scene in June we have been to multiple festivals, brought on some amazing writers and photographers to our website, and chatted with some of our favourite bands like ME REX, Sincere Engineer, and Proper. but most importantly shared a ton of great music.
I opened the show with our hour-one headliners ME REX with my song of the year "Pythons" my favourite track off the band’s Giant Elk Ablum, followed by "Emotionally Unclean" by Toodles & The Hectic Pity, and "Landline” by Sincere Engineer that features on Cheap Grills my album of the year.
I then kept the bangers coming (well this episode was all bangers, but still) by playing "I Don't Hate You" by Slow Joy and "No Stranger” by Pool Kids.
Next, I spun "Hi, Hello" by Other Half and "King Size Slim” by UNIVERSITY.
For our first unsigned spotlight of the night “Relaxer” by London-based noise merchants Occupants.
After that, I handed over to our other co-founder and online editor Kelly Rose for a selection of her faves of the year including “The Laughter” by Lawi Anywar, “Destroyer” by M.A.G.S. and “Crave” by Paramore.
I then played two bands that we had the pleasure of interviewing in this year’s festival season, The Guru Guru whom we interviewed at ATG with “Make Less Babies” and SUDS whom we chatted to at 2000trees with "Hard For ME".
Then it was the turn for "It's Not Me, It's You" by CHERYM and "Voice In Your Head ” by Shit Present.
I closed out the first hour with "Potential” by Proper. which can be found on my favourite release of the year’s Proper. Part-Timer a 12-minute long EP that inspired me to write over 1000 words about it in my initial draft review.
Our second hour kicked off with our hour two headliners Filth is Eternal with “Crawl Space” the absolutely fantastic hardcore jam that heralded a fistful of punk-tinged bangers as I followed it with "Boys In The Band" by Lambrini Girls and "Do It Faster” by Militarie Gun.
I then started a virtual mosh pit with "Mistuko" by friends of the show Lake Malice, “Judge Judy & Executioner” by Bristol’s Kite Thief and "Lay Down Your Flowers (feat. Lochie Keogh of Alpha Wolf)” by VEXED.
Up next it was turn for "Palpiations" by Felicette and "Disenchanted” by PAWS.
For the second unsigned spotlight of the night, I played “Monday” by Nothing Rhymes With Orange the first-ever band that submitted a track for our unsigned spotlight spot.
As with Kelly in the first hour, I handed over to one of our photographers/writers Nic Howells for a selection of his faves of the year as he spun, “Look Alive (Netic)” by Oxymorrons, “He’s A Man” by Bob Vylan, “Down (feat. Malevolence) by While She Sleeps, and “Pink Push-Up Bra” by Scene Queen.
I then played "Chained Into My Brain" by BEX and "Now Is Our Time” by Haunt the Woods.
Then we skipped stones across the Atlantic as I played "Idaho Alien" by Youth Lagoon, “Bathroom Floor” by KC Rae and "I Promise To Ruin Your Life” by BEST EX.
Finally, I closed out the show with a complete party of a song "Cream & Sugar” by Just Friends as I was determined to end the final show of the year on high, I chatted with Brond from the band about their track our interview that we published earlier in the moth.
