Episode 35
Last night’s episode of The Scene with me your host Thom with an H, was voage through the world of alt music. Our incredible lineup of bands and artists highlighted the variety and talent throughout the alt-scene.
I opened the show with our hour-one headliner “Alpha Beta Sigma” the brilliant new banger from Derry’s CHERYM. “Alpha Beta Sigma” is a vitriolic statement on gender inequality and violence against women and can be found on the band's debut album Take It Or Leave It which comes out next Friday on Alcopop! Records Followed by "Midlife Crisis" by House Parties, and "Life I'm Living In” by Just Friends.
I then kept the punk-fueled blistering start to this week’s show going by playing "No Father" by Neversaid and "Absolute Bloom” by Higher Power.
Next, I spun "Boys In The 90s" by gürl, "A Touch of Hell" by Sincere Engineer, and "Workaround” by Shoreline.
For our first unsigned spotlight of the night “Medicate” by The Zebecks. On “Medicate” the Glaswegian band discusses toxic masculinity and its prevalence in Scottish culture.
After that, I embraced the more hardcore side of the punk spectrum with “Smug” by Shooting Daggers, “Crawl Space” by Filth is Eternal, and “Disruption” by Comeback Kid.
I then spun two tracks that are a little bit tasty “Potential” by one of my fave bands Proper., and “Jump Ship” the brand new single from South Wales punks Fortune Teller.
Then it was the turn for "I'd Rather Have A Beer" by Loose Articles, "Wash Your Wounds" by Gallus, and "Abortion” by The Menstrual Cramps.
I closed out the first hour with "Bloodsucker” by punk rabble-rousers The Chisel who dropped their brand new album What A F****ing Nightmare on Friday.
Our second hour kicked off with our hour two headliner “DUST OFF/START AGAIN” by the BIG SPECIAL who just announced their debut album is coming this May, followed by "Gift Horse" by IDLES and "Make Less Babies” by The Guru Guru.
I then played "Purple" by Get Wrong and "Football” by Youthlagoon.
Next, I turned the volume up to 11 and mosh out to two of last year's most headbanging-ready releases "Judge Judy & Executioner" by Kite Thief and "Mitsuko” by Lake Malice.
For the second unsigned spotlight of the night, I played “ Contender” by New York’s The Phoenix Within. The track is a complete banger and sets the band up to have an absolutely epic 2024.
After that, I played a trio of my absolute faves “Baby, Does Your Heart Sink?” By Martha, “Freckle” by SUDS, and “Spiders” by ME REX
I then played "London (Love To Hate)" by Indoor Pets and "notes app apologies” by cheerbleederz.
I played a pair of epic releases "Everything Turns Blue" by Chelsea Wolfe and "Never Did Come Back” by Van Houten.
Finally, I closed out the show with “I’m Not the Boy” by Michigan indie folk rockers Frontier Ruckus.
Thanks to everyone who tuned in to last night’s episode of The Scene! I'll be back next week with more great alt-scene music.
