SeeYouSpaceCowboy announce ambitious album 'Coup De Grâce'
We say: if you’re going to listen to something this week, listen to this. San Diego's post-hardcore maestros, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, are gearing up to release their eagerly anticipated album, Coup De Grâce out 19 April via Pure Noise Records.
The band invites listeners into a neo-noir world with this complex and imaginative record, showcasing a reinvention of their identity and a refined exploration of melodic elements.
To get a taste of what's in store, fans can dive into the double music video for the singles "Respite For A Tragic Tale (ft. iRis.EXE)" and "Silhouettes in Motion". The video offer a glimpse into the theatrical and conceptual elements that define the album's narrative.
Frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa shares insights into the album's creative process, stating:
“This album was a chance for us to refine some of the melodic elements we had recently introduced to the band while also playing around with all things and bringing back reinvented version of past parts of our identity.
The hope is that we made something that mixes the innate emotion of post-hardcore with the cathartic essence of dancing and allure of cabaret/burlesque in a package reflecting the tale of a city on fire and it's all to tragic individuals and their indulgence and woes.”
The album's themes delve into a city on fire and the tragic tales of its indulgent inhabitants. Rather than a straightforward personal narrative, 'Coup De Grâce' introduces fictional characters within a noir-inspired world, elevating the storytelling to a new level of complexity and intrigue.
As a precursor to the album's release, fans can pre-order/pre-save 'Coup De Grâce' now. Additionally, SeeYouSpaceCowboy is hitting the road this spring, offering fans the chance to experience the new music live. The band will be touring the US with Better Lovers, Foreign Hands, and Greyhaven, and they are also set to perform at the Sound and Fury Festival in Los Angeles this July.
SeeYouSpaceCowboy's unique approach to music has always been deeply rooted in the life experiences and trauma of Connie Sgarbossa. Coup De Grâce follows the band's previous albums, The Correlation Between Entrance And Exit Wounds and The Romance Of Affliction, with a departure from personal accounts to a thematic exploration of a noir-inspired universe.
The album opens with a surprising sax-laden, smooth jazz ballad, transporting listeners to a decadent and dystopian parallel universe. The narrative unfolds through 12 songs, each telling a different tale within this neo-noir cityscape. The band's sonic experimentation takes center stage, incorporating elements of sasscore, punk, mathcore, and metalcore.
Connie Sgarbossa explains the album's visual origins, stating:
"The record started as a visual idea," explains Sgarbossa, "because when it came to lyrics, I didn't know what the fuck to write at first. I'm not a drug addict junkie anymore, so I'm not going to write another album like The Romance Of Affliction—I can't, and I don't want to. So my mind wandered to things that I love, like Frank Miller's Sin City graphic novels, where there are all these stories interlaced within a city. That led me to think about noir and neo-noir, and then pulp comics and novels from the '40s and '50s, which started to make it all come together lyrically and thematically, where each different song can be a different tale of the city."
Recorded by Matt Squire at Mixwave Studios, Coup De Grâce is a true musical album that presents a graphic novel-like experience. The characters within the album's narrative are brought to life with the help of narration by Iris.EXE and expert execution by the band members.
While the album explores new dimensions in SeeYouSpaceCowboy's sound, it stays true to their chaotic, violent noise signature. The band's evolution demonstrates that great art doesn't always require suffering, as Connie Sgarbossa, now in a better place, contributes to the creation of their most ambitious and accomplished album to date.
Sagrbossa shared:
"I hope, that people can look at this as a complete expression—not just 'Oh, this song has a good breakdown', but at the whole story, the whole setting, the visuals of it all and the way the music all ties in. I hope they see the creativity of that and the risk we've taken by embedding Cowboy with more weirdo outside influences that you usually wouldn't see from a band like us. It's like a full, unified creative venture, and something we put a lot of work into, so I hope they appreciate the weirdness of it. I feel like a lot of times people hear clean singing and more melody from a heavy band and think they're selling out. But no—we're actually technically weirder on this record than we've ever been."
The album challenges preconceptions about the band's direction, showcasing a technical weirdness that surpasses their previous works.
As the release date for Coup De Grâce approaches, fans can expect an immersive journey into the avant-garde world of SeeYouSpaceCowboy, where every track is a piece of the larger puzzle.
