Brighton’s math-pop trio Orchards are back with yet another addictive track, "Mug Song". Out now via Big Scary Monsters, the new single marks their third release of the year, following the bittersweet duo of "I Feel Terrible" and "Sweetie Pie". This release coincides with the launch of their October mini-headline tour, which kicks off with a sold-out show in Brighton before hitting Bristol and London.
Recorded with long-time collaborator Jack Wilson (Fickle Friends), "Mug Song" sees Orchards continue their recent shift towards a darker, more reflective sound. Vocalist Lucy Evers sums up the mood behind the new single:
“Mug Song is all the intrusive thoughts you have when you know a relationship is ending. Romantic, platonic—whatever it may be. All those nostalgic memories that flood your brain. I wrote them all down. All the simple, everyday things I miss. Just being alive with someone.”
Sonically, the track pairs Evers’ vivid storytelling with the band’s signature blend of bright guitars and complex rhythms, echoing themes of heartache and reminiscence. As fans have come to expect from Orchards, "Mug Song" delivers a mix of high-energy hooks and clever wordplay, wrapping raw emotion in a glossy, irresistible pop sheen.
The track lands just in time for the group’s UK tour, starting on 10th October in their hometown of Brighton, followed by shows at Bristol’s The Louisiana and London’s The Victoria. With an expanding back catalogue of catchy, emotionally-charged singles, Orchards’ live sets promise a mix of fan favourites alongside their new material.
Since bursting onto the scene with their debut album, Lovecore, in March 2020, Orchards have faced their share of ups and downs. Just as they seemed poised to break into the indie mainstream, the pandemic put a sudden halt to their momentum. Undeterred, they followed up with the Trust Issues EP—a record that saw the trio delve into darker themes, all while maintaining the effervescent charm that made them a favourite on the UK indie circuit.
Their perseverance has paid off. Despite whispers of a breakup, Orchards stayed active behind the scenes, regrouping and exploring new sonic avenues. This year’s run of singles, including "Mug Song", marks a confident new chapter for the band, with a sound that’s more mature and introspective without losing the vibrant edge that first put them on the map.
Their return to the stage this autumn is a much-anticipated one, and if the reception to their new material is anything to go by, the Brighton trio are only just hitting their stride.
