Overhead, The Albatross soar nack with new of pic new album ‘I Leave You This’

After a reflective hiatus, Dublin’s Overhead, The Albatross are set to release their long-anticipated second album, I Leave You This, on 15 November through Nice Weather For Airstrikes. The post-rock quartet, known for their cinematic soundscapes and dynamic live performances, have crafted an album that not only embraces their past but also expands their sonic palette in unexpected directions.

The new album arrives eight years after their critically acclaimed debut Learning To Growl, which saw the band nominated for the RTÉ Choice Music Prize and earned them a reputation for their intricately layered compositions and emotional intensity. With I Leave You This, Overhead, The Albatross push their sound further, blending elements of prog, math-rock, and electronic textures while maintaining the raw energy of their signature post-rock style.

To mark the announcement, the band have shared an AA-side single featuring the tracks “Your Last Breath” and “This Is Like Love”. “Your Last Breath” unfolds as a sprawling composition that explores themes of mortality and remembrance, juxtaposing sorrow with a sense of wonder and celebration. The track is a masterclass in atmosphere, weaving together delicate strings, pulsing synths, and surging guitars to create a piece that feels both vast and immediate.

On the other side, “This Is Like Love” leans into nostalgia, drawing inspiration from the music that shaped their formative years. Its layered arrangements and wistful melodies tap into a sense of longing, offering a sonic nod to a simpler time while charting the band’s ongoing evolution. “We wanted to capture that feeling of listening to a song that moves you deeply, even years later,” says the band. The result is a track that balances between reflective introspection and a forward-looking optimism, a testament to the emotive power that has become the band’s hallmark.

I Leave You This sees Overhead, The Albatross reuniting as a quartet, with original members Vinny Casey (guitar), Stevie Darragh (guitar and bass), Ben Garrett (drums), and David Prendergast (piano, keyboard) joined by Luke Daly (guitar and visuals), bringing fresh creative energy to the project. The album’s recording sessions were marked by a renewed focus on collaboration, allowing each member to explore new musical territories while staying true to the band’s core ethos.

Tracks like “A Letter” and “Hibakusha” showcase the band’s ability to blend sweeping cinematic moments with intricate musicianship, while pieces such as “Miss Na Kita” and “Paul Lynch” reveal a softer, more introspective side. Whether it’s the explosive crescendo of “At Sea” or the delicate interplay of “Welcome Home”, I Leave You This is an album that rewards close listening, full of subtle shifts and unexpected turns.

The album’s release is accompanied by a visually arresting music video for “Your Last Breath”, directed by Luke Daly. Shot in monochrome, the video mirrors the song’s themes of loss and beauty, using stark imagery and abstract visuals to complement the track’s sweeping dynamics. Fans can stream both tracks now on all major platforms.

With live performances always central to the band’s identity, Overhead, The Albatross are gearing up to bring I Leave You This to stages in 2025, with a string of tour dates set to be announced soon. Known for their immersive shows, blending atmospheric visuals and visceral energy, the band’s return to the stage is sure to be a highlight for long-time fans and newcomers alike.
