Thank unleash “Woke Frasier”, a blistering satire from their upcoming album ‘I Have A Physical Body That Can Be Harmed’
Leeds-based noise-rock band Thank have once again proven that they are not afraid to tackle heavy themes with their biting wit and abrasive sound. Their latest single, "Woke Frasier", offers fans there latest taste of what’s to come from their second full-length album, I Have A Physical Body That Can Be Harmed, slated for release on 8 November via Big Scary Monsters. The track is an explosive critique of right-wing podcast culture, specifically targeting figures who have appropriated the term ‘woke’ to suit their own agendas.
True to form, Thank weave together humour and rage in a way that feels both cathartic and chaotic. Frontman Freddy Vinehill-Cliffe brings his signature sardonic delivery to the forefront, lobbing lines like "Bad news, your credit card details are now woke / and you should send them to me for safe disposal" with the kind of dry humour that fans have come to expect. The song explores the perspective of a right-wing podcast host railing against imagined grievances.
Vinehill-Cliffe elaborates:
"Someone in Bedford thought this song was about Joe Rogan. It’s not, but also, fuck Joe Rogan."
Musically, "Woke Frasier" pushes Thank’s sound into darker, more experimental territory. While the band is known for their jagged, noise-laden punk, this track introduces eerie gothic undertones and subtle techno influences. The addition of Robin Smith’s saxophone, alongside intricate arrangements, creates a soundscape that is both unsettling and captivating. The band recorded the track at Beckview Studios with producers Chris Jones and Rob Slater, known for their work with Blacklisters and Mush. The result is a sound that balances intensity with a creeping sense of unease.
The accompanying video, directed by long-time collaborator George Chadwick, is a visual feast of absurdism, packed with references to The Simpsons and Frasier, all set within the broken world of a malfunctioning desktop computer. Described by the band as a sequel to their earlier "Torture Cube" video, it plays into Thank’s penchant for bizarre and offbeat visual narratives. "We wanted to centre the video around right-wing podcast grifters, with Chadwick taking the reins to deliver something both ridiculous and pointed," said the band in a statement.
Thank have long been hailed for their ability to mix humour with biting social commentary, and "Woke Frasier" is no exception. The single follows the release of "Writing Out A List Of All The Names Of God", another track from the forthcoming album that has already garnered praise for its uncompromising sound. With a string of UK and European tour dates lined up, including shows alongside punk heavyweights Cherubs and Future Of The Left, Thank are poised to bring their confrontational sound to new audiences. Their upcoming album promises more of the same: aggressive, unflinching commentary paired with daring sonic experimentation.
For fans of noise rock with a sharp edge, I Have A Physical Body That Can Be Harmed is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Thank continue to push the boundaries of what noise rock can be, all while retaining their knack for blending satire with serious political critique.
