Overhead, The Albatross release video for new single "Paul Lynch" as they gear up for the release of their second album
Dublin-based post-rock band Overhead, The Albatross have shared an official video for their latest single, “Paul Lynch,” now available on major streaming platforms. The single is part of their upcoming second album I Leave You This, set to be released on 15 November via their new label, Nice Weather For Airstrikes.
The emotionally charged track serves as a tribute to Paul Lynch, a close friend of the band who played a crucial role in shaping the album. The band members describe “Paul Lynch” as an essential part of their creative journey, with David Prendergast, the group’s pianist and keyboardist, revealing that Lynch’s support and presence in the studio were pivotal in bringing them back together after years apart.
Speaking about the track, the band expressed their gratitude for Lynch’s enduring influence:
“Paul Lynch” is named in memory of a close friend who played an essential role in the creation of this album. Paul, a best friend of our band member David, was a constant presence in the studio during the writing process. It was his encouragement that brought us back together after years apart, and without him, this album might not have existed. This song is our tribute to his friendship and lasting impact on us as individuals and as a band. The song ends with a cathartic chant that helps us remember Paul and invites those listening to remember the people in their own lives who they have lost along the way.”
Clocking in at nearly ten minutes, “Paul Lynch” is marked by sweeping melodies and evolving textures. Overhead, The Albatross effortlessly blend post-rock elements with prog-tinged electronic flourishes, creating a reflective yet uplifting journey. The track balances layers of synths and guitars with stirring crescendos, crafting a dynamic soundscape that resonates with listeners.
The accompanying video captures this balance, combining cinematic visuals with subtle narrative cues to evoke a sense of loss, memory, and hope. Directed by band member Luke Daly, the video visually complements the track's theme of remembering a cherished connection, creating an immersive experience for viewers.
“Paul Lynch” follows their double A-side single, “Your Last Breath” / “This Is Like Love,” released earlier this year. Both tracks hint at the direction of I Leave You This, an album that merges the band’s signature post-rock sensibilities with modern electronic touches. While “Your Last Breath” explores a compelling blend of strings, electronics, and guitars, “This Is Like Love” draws on nostalgic influences that have shaped the band’s sound.
Overhead, The Albatross formed in 2011 and quickly gained recognition with their debut album, Learning To Growl (2016), which was nominated for the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Album of the Year and earned Album of the Week honours from the Irish Times. Following a brief hiatus, they returned to the scene with the standalone track “L’Appel du Vide” in 2022, marking their quiet yet impactful comeback.
Fans can expect I Leave You This to build on the band's distinctive sound, combining cinematic expanses with fresh textures and a newfound emotional resonance. The album promises a journey that is both expansive and intimately woven, balancing their post-rock roots with progressive exploration.
Overhead, The Albatross are set to announce new live dates for 2025 following the album’s release. Their previous performances include appearances at festivals like Electric Picnic, Indiependence, and Castlepalooza, as well as a sold-out London headline show earlier this year.
With the anticipation building for I Leave You This, listeners are eager to see what new directions this second album will take. For now, “Paul Lynch” stands as a testament to friendship, memory, and the power of creative rebirth, solidifying the band's reputation as one of Dublin’s most emotive and immersive acts.
