Brooklyn's Common Sage reflect on loss and transformation in new single “Until I’m Gone”

Brooklyn post-hardcore band Common Sage has dropped their latest single, “Until I’m Gone,” a reflective track that dives into themes of change and loss, ahead of their upcoming album Closer To;, set for release on 22 November via Equal Vision Records. Produced by Brett Romnes, known for his work with acts like Anxious, Oso Oso, and Hot Mulligan, Closer To; promises a sound that pays homage to the genre’s legacy while crafting a distinct voice within the modern post-hardcore scene.

The single sees vocalist and songwriter Julian Rosen stepping outside his personal narrative, exploring loss from another perspective.

Rosen explains:

“I wanted to try to get away from solely writing about my own experiences on this record and try to explore another’s point of view. ‘Until I’m Gone’ focuses on similar themes of change, loss, etc., but more specific to someone else’s struggles that I was subject to witness, which ends up being told from my point of view.” This narrative shift brings an introspective and layered quality to the song, which stands out in both its sonic and lyrical expression.

“Until I’m Gone” features a stripped-back yet powerful approach that builds tension through contrasting elements. The track kicks off with a somber, almost haunting guitar melody, underscoring the emotional weight of Rosen's lyrics. While the instrumentation may initially seem subdued, it doesn’t stay quiet for long. As the track progresses, Common Sage layers guitars and drums with a raw intensity, balancing moments of restraint with bursts of urgency that keep listeners on edge.

Fans of early 2000s post-hardcore and emo will feel an immediate connection, as Common Sage channels these influences into their music without falling into mimicry. The band leans into the clean, melodic lines reminiscent of Long Island’s emo sound, while drawing from the discordant edge of bands like Quicksand. However, Common Sage doesn’t rely on nostalgia alone. They bring a fresh, intentional approach to the genre, resisting easy hooks and predictable breakdowns in favour of nuanced progressions that reward close listening.

Adding to the momentum surrounding Closer To;, Common Sage recently released a video for “Vehicles,” another track from the upcoming album, directed by Rich Weinberger of Gatherers. The video’s visuals complement the song’s thematic tension, providing a glimpse into the emotional core of the album. With this release, Common Sage continue to carve out their own space in a crowded genre, capturing attention without compromising their artistic integrity.

In December, the band is set to hit the road on the West Coast in support of Reggie & The Full Effect, with dates in California and Colorado. This tour marks an exciting opportunity for fans to experience Common Sage’s music in a live setting, where the band’s commitment to their sound and message is likely to resonate on an even deeper level.

Closer To; drops on 22 November, and with tracks like “Until I’m Gone,” Common Sage demonstrates a depth of musicality and storytelling that has the potential to connect with both long-time genre enthusiasts and new listeners alike. As Common Sage reflects on life’s more challenging themes, they’ve crafted a sound that feels rooted, intentional, and unmistakably their own.cidunt gravida vitae lobortis erat.
