The Calamatix share new single "Love, Lies & Alibis" and announce debut album
California-based ska quartet The Calamatix have released their new single "Love, Lies & Alibis," offering a taste of their upcoming self-titled debut album set for release on 20 September via Hellcat Records.
The band, known for blending Jamaican rocksteady and old-school ska with a contemporary twist, presents a track where punk's brashness meets the infectious, up-tempo rhythms of ska.
Vocalist Raylin Joy describes "Love, Lies & Alibis" as a reflection on the complexities of relationships and friendships, capturing the ups and downs that everyone navigates through life.
With Joy stating:
"Basically, the song is about the good, the bad, the ugly and sad. Working through relationships and friendships even when you're going through it. We all just have to keep going through the love, lies, and alibis of life."
The single, co-written by Joy with Tim Armstrong (Op Ivy, Rancid), Lil Aaron (Machine Gun Kelly, Demi Lovato, Lizzo), and Albert Hype (Bad Bunny, Kali Uchis).
The Calamatix consists of Raylin Joy (vocals), Adam Porris (guitar), William “Matty” Taylor (bass), and Clarence "Pocket" Kidd III (drums). Raylin Joy, the heart of the band's sound, brings a wealth of life experiences to her songwriting, which is both relatable and triumphant. Born in Ventura, California, and having spent part of her life in Scotland, Joy's diverse background informs the band's music.
The band originated from a songwriting collaboration between Joy and Tim Armstrong. During a challenging period in her life, Joy found solace and hope through music, channeling her struggles with depression into the band's optimistic and spirited songs.
With Joy sharing:
"When this record first came into existence years ago, I was going through one of the hardest periods of my life. I was really struggling with depression and I didn't have a lot to live for, honestly, at the time. I was really, really struggling. Then I would go in the studio and we'd write a song and I'd just be on the biggest high. So, for a long time, this record was one of the main things keeping me going.”
The album was recorded over a few intense days, capturing the band's chemistry and raw emotion. Produced by Tim Armstrong and Albert Hype, the sessions provided a therapeutic escape for the musicians, resulting in music that is both uplifting and deeply personal.
