Rising UK alt-metal unit Defences have released their stunning new single and accompanying video for "The Almost" via Long Branch Records. The track, available for streaming now, dives into the perils of comparing oneself to others, a theme that resonates strongly in today’s social media-driven world.
Frontwoman Cherry Duesbury’s powerful voice continues to captivate listeners, solidifying her position as a standout talent in modern metalcore. Defences’ new release showcases their growth and confidence, reflecting their evolution both musically and thematically.
Defences explained the inspiration behind "The Almost":
“With ‘The Almost,’ we wanted to dive into the dangers of comparing yourself and your achievements to the people around you. It is all too easy to see the often manipulated, idyllic versions of people’s lives on social media and come to the conclusion that you’re missing out, that you’re not living life to the fullest. To be stuck in a place where you feel like your life has not begun is a horrible and unnecessary feeling, and we wanted to put a name to it. That’s where ‘The Almost’ comes in.”
The band continued:
"Our version of this place, ‘The Almost,’ is a sort of limbo. It serves as an allegory for these comparisons, trapping us and getting in the way of self-fulfilment and happiness. The results of this process are seen in this darker, more corrupted reflection of Cherry that has taken over in the visuals, serving as a personification of the dangers of being trapped in vicious cycles like this one.”

The Almost" follows the band’s previous singles "The Curse" and "Gold In The Dark."
Defences will be returning to British stages soon, with Swarm6ix joining them as special guests. Their live performances have earned them a strong reputation, with numerous UK tours, sell-out headline shows, and festival appearances at Download, Takedown, Turbulence, and Burn It Down under their belts. With new material, live shows, and the support of their dedicated fan community, #TheHeart, 2024 promises to be a big year for the quintet.
