Fightmilk return with new single "Summer Bodies" critiquing patriarchal beauty standards

London’s “strop-pop” quartet Fightmilk are back in action with their new single "Summer Bodies," released on 27th June 2024 via Fika Recordings and INH Records. This is their first new material in three years, marking a triumphant return to the music scene.

The track is a catchy singalong anthem, combining the band's trademark tongue-in-cheek wit with swirling energy and gritty raw emotion. It critiques patriarchal beauty standards and the unrealistic expectations imposed on women and femmes.

Vocalist Lily explains:

“It’s about how women and femmes are constantly bombarded with media telling us how to be our best and most beautiful selves, or, bluntly, how to bully your mind and body into an image set by constantly moving goalposts—straight teeth, white skin, feminine but not girly, cool but not threatening, skinny waist, snatched jawline. Products that promise to shrink you in the guise of 'wellness'. And if you don’t look like that, you’re supposed to hate yourself until you do. No thanks. Our favourite bit in this song is where we all take turns unleashing a big scream.”

Quote from person:

“Suspendisse dapibus libero nunc, fermentum vestibulum est posuere ut. Donec mi nisl, tincidunt et mauris quis, tincidunt tincidunt eros. Praesent in rhoncus libero, eu ultrices ligula. Fusce eu pretium libero. Phasellus eu diam eu lectus consectetur ullamcorper vitae ut elit. Maecenas molestie elit tellus, sed imperdiet mauris efficitur bibendum.”

"Summer Bodies" is the first taste of their much-anticipated third album. The band recently signed to Fika Recordings and INH Records, with further details to be revealed in the coming months. The song questions society’s ridiculous and ever-changing expectations of women’s bodies and the futile quest to ‘be sexy,’ with Lily’s deadpan commentary weaving between buoyant harmonies and gloriously scuzzy hooks.

A fierce ode to self-love amidst the onslaught of damaging beauty standards, "Summer Bodies" showcases Fightmilk’s heavier sound while maintaining their indie/pop roots.

As bassist Healey summarises:

“life's too short, do whatever the fck you want, do no harm and take no sh*t."

Formed in 2015 in London’s beer gardens, Fightmilk’s music is a perfect soundtrack to navigating millennial life. The band comprises Lily (vocals, guitar), Alex (guitar, vocals), Healey (bass, vocals), and Nick (drums, vocals). Their debut album, "Not With That Attitude," released in 2018, gained critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base, thanks to its anthemic power-pop riffs and relatable lyrics.
