Newcastle’s indie-punk outfit Fast Blood have released the video for their new single "Sunny Blunts", the title track from their debut album Sunny Blunts out now via Sangre Rapida. The track, which closes out the LP, is a poignant shift from the band's usual intensity. The single takes on a more reflective tone, with Abigail Barlow’s vocals taking centre stage against a subdued, haunting guitar refrain.
"Sunny Blunts" stands apart from the abrasive energy found in earlier tracks like "Sexual Healing" and "Salvation", which helped launch Fast Blood into the underground scene. This latest release shows a band unafraid to break from tradition, pushing past the boundaries of what might be expected from their raucous brand of indie punk. Commenting on the single, the band noted the song’s deeply personal themes of nostalgia, anger, and pride, describing it as a slow-building anthem that crescendos with emotional intensity.
Recorded and mixed by Chris McManus at Blank Studios in Newcastle, and mastered by Will Killingsworth of ORCHID and AMPERE fame, Sunny Blunts has already received high praise. The debut record was lauded by Razorcake, Louder Than War, and a range of alternative publications including Punktastic and Noizze. The album’s dense, hook-laden sound has cemented Fast Blood’s position in the indie-punk scene, offering a mix of raw energy and introspection.
In tandem with the release of their new video, Fast Blood have confirmed they’ll be hitting the road in October 2024, supporting two punk heavyweights: Benefits and Canadian legends Fucked Up. These UK dates are bound to pack out, and for those unable to catch them this autumn, the band will also make an appearance at the 2025 Manchester Punk Festival.
With Sunny Blunts out now via Sangre Rapida, and support slots on the horizon, Fast Blood’s rise shows no sign of slowing down. If their debut album is any indication, the Newcastle quartet are poised to carve out a space all their own in the UK punk landscape.
