First Timers Fest is back for its 8th edition on 5 May

Since its inception in 2013, First Timers Fest has been shaking up the London music scene with its mission to diversify and demystify the DIY music community. Spearheaded by Bryony Beynon (of Good Throb and BB and the Blips), this festival is all about providing a platform for new voices and fresh talent.

The rules? Simple yet revolutionary: every band must be making their live debut, have at least one member who either hasn't been in a band before or is playing an instrument that's new to them, and feature at least one woman or member of a marginalized community. These guidelines, born from a spirit of inclusivity, remain at the heart of the festival's ethos.

After a brief hiatus due to venue changes and the challenges of COVID, First Timers Fest is roaring back to life and ready to celebrate its eighth year at The Victoria, Dalston. This year's lineup promises to be as eclectic and vibrant as ever, with 12 brand-new bands set to grace the stage and make their debut in front of an eager audience:

  • Magpie Conspiracy

  • Dewclaw

  • Anserine

  • Psybastorm

  • Zomigs

  • Chronic Matthew

  • Jezebelz

  • Art School

  • Saturn's Icy Sisters

  • Strangers

  • The Crow

  • Wagults

But First Timers Fest is more than just a showcase—it's a community-driven initiative that empowers aspiring musicians through a series of workshops. From picking up an instrument for the first time to experimental songwriting, these sessions are designed to build confidence and foster creativity in people of all ages and abilities.

Over the years, First Timers Fest has nurtured talent that's gone on to release records and headline bigger shows. Bands like Big Joanie, Breakup Haircut, Whitelands, Any Dog (formerly Bitch Hunt) and Charmpit all got their start right at the festival, and this year's lineup could feature the next breakout star.

So mark your calendars for 5 May and head down to The Victoria, Dalston, for a day of discovery, celebration, and unforgettable performances. Who knows? You might just witness the birth of your new favourite band.
