The Get Up Kids Announce 2025 UK & EU Tour for 25th Anniversary of ‘Something to Write Home About’
The Get Up Kids are set to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their iconic sophomore album, Something to Write Home About, with a 2025 UK and European tour. Following the digital release of the album's deluxe reissue via Polyvinyl Record Co., the Kansas City emo pioneers will bring their high-energy performances to cities across Europe and the UK, kicking off in Athens, Greece, in May. The tour announcement comes as the band continues their US tour, marking a triumphant return to the global stage.
The 25th-anniversary reissue of Something to Write Home About, newly remastered by Joe LaPorta, features the original tracks along with a treasure trove of 12 rare or unreleased demos. Fans can immerse themselves in early acoustic recordings by lead vocalist Matt Pryor and revisit the album’s rich, emotionally charged soundscape. A physical edition of the album, due out on September 25th, will offer fans a collector’s dream—a double LP housed in a large-format booklet, featuring handwritten lyrics, rare photos, and more insights into the band’s journey.
Released in 1999, Something to Write Home About is widely considered a genre-defining masterpiece. At the time of its release, the album stood out against the backdrop of commercial rock and nü-metal, with The Get Up Kids favoring heartfelt lyrics and melodic, expansive emo-pop. "Nothing that was popular sounded like our album," reflects guitarist Jim Suptic, acknowledging how their unique sound set them apart from mainstream trends. Alongside other emo classics from that year, like Jimmy Eat World's Clarity and The Promise Ring's Very Emergency, the album helped cement the foundation for the genre’s future success.
The album’s influence reached far beyond its initial impact, inspiring future emo and pop-punk powerhouses like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance. The Get Up Kids also paved the way for Vagrant Records to become a leading force in the emo scene, signing other influential acts like Saves the Day and Dashboard Confessional. Their breakout success saw them touring with giants like Green Day and Weezer, and selling out shows across the globe.
For fans, the remastered edition of Something to Write Home About offers a nostalgic trip back to the late ’90s, with the added bonus of hearing unreleased demos that offer a raw glimpse into the album’s creation. For the band, these demos evoke powerful memories. "When I hear those particular demos," recalls bassist Rob Pope, "it takes me right back to that rehearsal room"—a decommissioned ROTC training facility in downtown Kansas City where the band honed their sound.
The Get Up Kids’ 2025 tour will offer fans across Europe and the UK the chance to relive these formative years. With stops in major cities like Berlin, Milan, Amsterdam, and London, fans can expect the band to deliver high-octane performances of their classic tracks, bringing the energy and emotion that made Something to Write Home About a lasting gem in the emo canon.
